Introduction: Summer Intern Elisabeth Graham

Hello there! My name is Elisabeth Graham and I am the new Summer Intern for George Blood LP. This past May, I received my B.A. in English and American Studies from Rutgers University - New Brunswick. Throughout my studies, I became interested in the preservation and curation of cultural heritage. Over the past year, I wrote my senior thesis on vinyl records and their place in the popular imagination; through this, I gained an interest in “outdated” forms of media and how we interact with it in a digital age.

While I believe that one of the best ways to learn about something is to read and write about it, I wanted to find a way to get hands-on experience with outdated media. Beyond exploring its tactility, I wanted to learn more about how we try to save data beyond its shelf life. My search for ways to preserve led me to George Blood LP in Chestnut Hill, where I will be spending my summer learning the ins and outs of digitization and preservation. My goal is to create a space where you and I, reader, can learn more about George Blood LP’s mission, people, and best practices. To make this goal a reality, I will be using the blog as a space to document the various forms of audiovisual conservation.

The George Blood LP blog will not only be a space for updates, it will also create an opportunity to explore the intricacies of audiovisual preservation. From discussing what digital file types best serve archivists to the difference between dirt and dust on discs, this blog will become a way for you and I both to learn more about the work done by preservationists. Check in here on Tuesdays and Thursdays to see what I have to tell you this week!
